DTF Transfer Application Guide

Follow these steps carefully to get the best results from your DTF prints.

Start by preparing the garment. Place your shirt or fabric item on the heat press and run a pre-press at 305°F (150°C) for 3–5 seconds. This removes moisture and smooths wrinkles so the transfer bonds evenly. For thicker garments like hoodies or canvas totes, extend the pre-press to 7–10 seconds to drive out hidden moisture.

Next, position the transfer by laying the DTF print side down, film side up, on the garment. Double-check placement and alignment before closing the press. To prevent shifting, especially on larger designs or stretchy fabrics, use heat-resistant tape.

For the first press, set your heat press to 305°F (150°C) at medium to firm pressure for 10–15 seconds. Close the press and allow it to apply steady, even pressure across the design. If you are working with a manual press, apply extra firm and even pressure to avoid weak edges.

After pressing, you have two peel options. For hot peel, remove the film right away while the transfer is still hot. Peel in a smooth, steady motion starting at one corner. For cold peel, let the garment cool completely before peeling. Cold peel often gives sharper edges and is more forgiving for new users, while hot peel is faster and can create a slightly different finish. If the film resists or part of the design lifts, lay the film back down, cover with parchment, and repress for 3–5 seconds before peeling again.

Once the film is removed, do a final curing press. Place parchment paper, a Teflon sheet, or a piece of cotton fabric over the design and press again at 305°F for 5–7 seconds. This step ensures the ink bonds fully and gives the print a softer finish. Use parchment paper for a matte look or a Teflon sheet for a glossy finish.

For aftercare, wait at least 24 hours before washing to let the print cure completely. Wash inside-out in cold water with mild detergent, and either hang dry or tumble dry on low heat. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners. If the edges lift after washing, simply cover with parchment paper and repress for 5 seconds to reseal.
